Getting Ready for the Tango Potluck

Last night I began cleaning the shop for the Tango Potluck. The space gets used for many events -- dances, dinners, and Christmas parties -- but its primary service is as a workshop. In the last few weeks, my kids and I have been busy in the space, building a set of redwood stairs, finishing work on a steel trellis, and gluing up a purpleheart tabletop. It's easier to clean up after the steelworking projects, since the heavy debris from cutting and grinding all falls to the floor and is easily swept up. But the cutting and routing of wood sends a fine cloud of wood dust aloft which settles on every surface. As I swept the floor and benches, I considered just how clean the space needed to be, and whether anyone would mind picking up a little residual sawdust on their clothing. Two sweepings or three? Sweep the walls? Wash the floor or not? I imagined the crowd who comes to milongas, and where they stand, sit, and lean. Then I considered their attire, and the clinging sawdust, and I remembered Grace's black velvet dress. I think I'll sweep three times, AND wash the floor.    -- Chris Dorsi
