TangoHelena announces a Weekend Workshop with
Alex Krebs
May 21 - 23, 2010
Alex is one of the most renowned dancers and teachers of Argentine tango in the US, and we're very lucky to have him offer a workshop here.
Workshop schedule:
Friday, May 21st
1. 6:30 - 7:45 pm Tango Fundamentals I: Posture and Walking. Vitally important for learning and progressing in tango, these skills are crucial to master because they form the basis of all succeeding movement. This class introduces less experienced dancers to the basic individual movements and serves as an important review for more experienced dancers and those who teach or who desire to teach. (Suitable for all levels)
2. 8:00 - 9:15 pm Tango Fundamentals II: Connection with the Floor, the Music and your Partner. You may have heard it said, “it’s all about connection," and this is particularly true in tango. Good dancers are grounded with the floor, able to translate the music into pleasing movements, and offer their partners a comfortable yet secure embrace even though the movements and dancing styles may change. (Suitable for all levels)
9:15 - 10:00 pm Practica (free!)
Saturday, May 22nd
3. 11:00 am – 12:15 pm Musicality I. Musicality is what breathes life into tango. This class will review basic tango rhythms. Here, we will learn how to listen for the different elements which make up tango. Please bring pencil and paper as this will be mostly discussion although there will be some dancing as well. (Suitable for all levels)
4. 1:30 – 2:45 pm Musicality II. This is a continuation of the first musicality class with emphasis on understanding some of the intricate tango rhythms and possible movements which harmonize with the music. (Suitable for intermediates and above)
5. 3:00 – 4:15 pm Musicality III. A continuation of Musicality II. The elements of musicality will be combined showing how the melody and movement dynamics orchestrate together. Alex will select several composers and show how the same movement can be used in a variety of ways. (Suitable for intermediates and above)
**8:30 – midnight: Milonga at Allegro Dance Studio with Alex as DJ
Sunday, May 23rd
6. 11:00 am – 12:15 pm Giros -- giro (molinete) technique for followers and leaders in open embrace and close embrace (suitable for all levels)
7. 1:15 – 2:30 pm Refining your close embrace -- all the details of how to have a better close embrace dance: from posture, walking and connections, to a basic vocabulary of steps (intermediates and above)
8. 2:45 – 4:00 pm Sacadas -- technical details for executing sacadas comfortably and musically in open embrace and close embrace. (Suitable for intermediates and above)
All classes and the milonga will be held at Allegro Dance Studio, 3750 N. Montana Avenue.

A brief background on Alex:
Alex is one of the foremost dancers and teachers of Argentine tango in this country. He's taught tango across the US and all over Europe for the last 10 years. He's one of the few non-Argentine teachers to have performed in Buenos Aires and to have partnered some of the top Argentine teachers (like Luciana Valle and Florencia Taccetti). He also plays the bandoneon and has released two tango CDs with his group "Conjunto Berretin."
In his teaching, Alex focuses on fundamental technique in close and open embrace, and emphasizes connection, musicality, and improvisation. He's known for his clarity, patience, and friendliness as a teacher. His insights into the mechanics of the dance make his classes valuable for dancers of any level and background.
