David and Lisette

What an interesting couple of days! For me the time with David and Lisette was time well spent. After not quite a year, I was able to make sense of some of what they were saying about axis and weight shifts. It was really interesting to listen to David talking about dancing weight shifts and not steps. And, it was really interesting to watch David and Lisette negotiate their dance. It may take a while before I get the notions of opening and closing the embrace to accommodate my partner, it seems like there is more than one way to make that adjustment.

Managing That Gender Tension

Perhaps the real test of great dance partners is how they acknowledge and express that age-old tension between men and women. They craft a level trust and belief in one another that is the envy of non-initiates. Yet during each dance, by playing on the edge, they risk slipping into the banal physical reality that overtakes the common romance. How confident must these dancers be to manage this balancing act dance after dance?
